A message from Bishop Gerald M. Barbarito
September 26, 2009

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

It is a great joy for me to welcome each and every one of you to the Cathedral of St. Ignatius Loyola as we celebrate this Mass in honor of the National Grandparents Pilgrimage.

With heartfelt devotion we remember Saints Joachim and Ann, grandparents of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Their humble, yet powerful example of prayer must have been a source of inspiration for both the Blessed Virgin Mary and the child, Jesus, in His youth.

In the same way, your prayerful presence, your dedicated faith, shines as an inspiration not only to your grandchildren, but also to the faithful in your parish communities. The seed of faith that you plant in the hearts of your grandchildren is a strong seed, one that is nourished by your example of piety and love. Thank you for your powerful example of faith, hope and love that you share with your families on a daily basis.

I pray that through the intercession of Saints Joachim and Ann you will continue to find the strength to be faithful witnesses of Jesus Christ to your families, most especially your grandchildren. In a special way I would like to thank Mrs. Catherine Wiley for proposing this National Grandparents Pilgrimage, the first to take place in the United States of America, as well as Mrs. Janice Petersen Minshew in the Office of Family Life for all that she has done to facilitate this special day.

May God continue to bless and fill you with all His grace and peace. With every prayerful wish, I am

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Gerald M. Barbarito
